The University of Plymouth Yacht Club are proud to hold two formal dinners alongside the University of Plymouth Sailing and Powerboat Club. The “Christmas Dinner” and “Colours Dinner” are both hugely popular events where we recognise and celebrate achievements by club members throughout the year.
Every one or two weeks, university work intensity considered, UPYC will organise a drinking social, where club members can interact off the water and engage over a few drinks. Club socials are [usually] themed, from the customary “anything but cups” social, to nautical themes such as “Baywatch” or “Marker Buoys”. UPYC regularly teams up with other UPSU Clubs and Societies, and socials aren’t to be missed!
UPYC both host and participate in racing events throughout the academic year, from BUSA events; Match Racing Championships and Yacht Nationals, to the UPYC Match Racing series. Special themed socials are held for participants of racing events. Find out more about racing here.
Throughout the year, UPYC organise a number of special guest speakers to give a talk about an aspect of yachting they are particularly passionate about. Last year, we heard from club sponsor, Andrew Sinclair, from local sail loft “Technique Voile Plymouth” in a fantastic talk about last year’s Vendee Globe, as well as professional umpire, Richard Kingsnorth in a detailed introduction to the rules of Match Racing. We also invited University of Plymouth lecturer Dr Richard Pemberton to give a talk at the Royal Western Yacht Club, sharing knowledge surrounding “The Evolution of the Americas Cup”. We are particularly interested in projects local to Plymouth, and look forward to welcoming more speakers over the next year.
Community and Environment
UPYC engage in a number of community events throughout the year, including the UPSU Watersport Festival, and other MGA activities, often supporting local charities. Find out more about charity fundraising with UPYC here.
We are also proud to organise and engage in events promoting environmental sustainability in Plymouth and the surrounding area. Find out more about environmental action here.
