Racing with UPYC

The University of Plymouth Yacht Club offers members the chance to engage in racing at all levels.

Training is offered for those wishing to progress their skills both on the water and off, resulting in highly ranked student teams competing locally, nationally and internationally.

In 2018, UPYC will enter the club's two J80s into the local IRC fleet with exclusively student teams, using our brand new racing sails. UPYC also actively supports other local racers, offering the chance for students to race different yachts. Our main racing events for 2017/18 are as follows

Trophée de l'île Pelée 2017 – European University Sailing Cup

Following strong performances in previous years, UPYC are sending two teams to compete in the 2017 Trophée de l'île Pelée, racing J80s in Cherbourg, France. This is an excellent opportunity for the club to represent the University of Plymouth internationally, proceeding training on the club's J80s in the sound.

UPYC Match Racing Series 2018

Each year, UPYC host a match racing series out of the Royal Western Yacht Club racing the club's own J80s. UPYC run the event over weekends early in the new year, supported by professional umpires and the club's sponsors. A detailed training regime including on the water tuition and lecture theatre theory sessions are held in the preceding weeks.

BUCS National Match Racing Series 2018

UPYC will send at least one team to the BUCS National Match Racing Series in 2018 to represent Plymouth University.

BUCS Yachting Championships 2018

UPYC have always performed well at "Yacht Nats", and intend to continue the form, hoping to send two teams in 2018. Teams of 8 (min. 2 female) race Beneteau First 40's over 4 days out of Port Solent and Gunwarf Quay in Southampton by the best British universities have to offer. Training is offered on a range of similarly sized and rigged boats at Plymouth, as well as before racing at the event.

Information about how to register interest to compete will be posted on our Facebook group here
