UPYC are proud of our high standard of student skippers, who capably skipper the club’s J80s, and other chartered boats, with student crew with often little or no experience. If you think you have what it takes to skipper for UPYC, you must pass a shore based and on the water induction testing your competence, and hold the following certificates (minimum).
- RYA Day Skipper (theory and practical)
- RYA Powerboat Level 2
- RYA/ STCW First Aid
- VHF Licence
If you hold the above qualifications, drop us a message and we’ll organise an induction ASAP! Remember you will need to provide certification for all qualifications before you can take students onto the water.
For those missing qualifications, contact our training officer here, or watch out for course dates on our Facebook group here.
Approved Skipper Scheme
Do you think you have what it takes but aren’t qualified yet? Each year, the University of Plymouth Yacht Club select up to 4 club members to partially sponsor through all the above qualifications on the condition they skipper for UPYC during the next academic year. Successful applicants are announced at the UPYC Christmas Meal, so look out for information about how to apply at our Facebook group here.
